Elvis Presley : The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show : 1956
Dave Marsh, in his insightful musical biography Elvis, writes about the moment Elvis Presley burst upon the American scene via The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show on January 28, 1956. 'In his first appearance on the Dorsey Brothers' TV show, the young singer rocked the world'. Marsh described Elvis' startling rendition of Heartbreak Hotel and concluded, 'He owned the song and he owned the crowd'.
After 17 months of personal appearances all over the south of the USA, Elvis Presley made his first appearance on the National American T.V. on the Stage Shows, from Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey.
Those shows were broadcasted live from the CBS Studios in New York City. Young Elvis The Pelvis first appearance took place in the 28 of January 1956, and was followed by 5 others throughout the next 2 months until the 24 of March 1956. Note the fantastic evolution of the way Elvis is presented by the Dorsey Brothers from the 1st to the 6th show! Ladies and Gentlemen, just sit back and welcome

I Got A Woman
Elvis and his band rehearsed at Nola Studios in New York on the morning of Saturday, January 28th. That night the show aired from CBS Studio 50. It was raining and the then-unknown Elvis Presley did not draw a large studio audience. Also appearing on the show were singer Sarah Vaughan and comic Gene Sheldon.
Tommy Dorsey introduced Cleveland disc jockey Bill Randle, who, in turn, introduced Elvis to his first national audience by saying: 'We'd like at this time to introduce to you a young fellow who, like many performers - Johnnie Ray among them - came out of nowhere to be an overnight big star.
This young fellow we saw for the first time while making a movie short. We think tonight that he's going to make television history for you. We'd like you to meet him now - Elvis Presley'.
Elvis wore a black shirt, white tie, dress pants with a shiny stripe, and a tweed jacket. He sang a 'Shake, Rattle & Roll / Flip, Flop & Fly' medley and 'I Got a Woman'. The audience reacted with both shock and interest. The show received an 18.4% ratings share while its competition 'The Perry Como Show' on NBC received a 34.6% share. The option was picked up and Elvis appeared a total of six times on 'Stage Show'.
Elvis was paid $1,250 for each of the six 'Stage Shows' on which he appeared.

Elvis made his second appearance on the 'Stage Show' singing 'Baby let's Play House' and 'Tutti Frutti'. Nielsen ratings for the show were down from the previous week at 18.2% against 38.5% for Perry Como's show.

Blue Suede Shoes
Heartbreak Hotel
A snow storm almost prevented Elvis from driving to New York from Charlotte, NC.
With almost no time to spare, Elvis arrived at Studio 50 for his third appearance on the 'Stage Show'. He sang 'Blue Suede Shoes' and finally plugged his latest release, 'Heartbreak Hotel'.
The Dorsey band backed him on the last song and Charley Shavers took the instrumental break on trumpet. Other guests on the show were Ella Fitzgerald and Jackie Miles.

Elvis returned to New York for his fifth appearance on 'Stage Show'. The program now aired at 8:30 p.m eastern time, following 'The Jackie Gleason Show'. Also appearing this evening were comedian Henny Youngman and eleven-year old organist Glenn Derringer. Elvis Sang 'Blue Sude Shoes' and 'Heartbreak Hotel' while wearing a black shirt, white tie and a mohair coat.

Money Honey
Heartbreak Hotel
Elvis' sixth and final 'Stage Show' appearance was on March 24, 1956.
That night Carl Perkins was to have been on the opposing 'Perry Como Show'. However, Carl had been badly hurt in an automobile accident on the way to New York. That night on 'Stage Show', Elvis sang 'Heartbreak Hotel' and out of respect for his friend Carl, Elvis refused to sing Perkins' 'Blue Suede Shoes' as previously planned and instead sang 'Money Honey'. The othe guest on the show was Glenn Derringer. Ratings from the neilson Corp. gave 'Stage Show' 20.9% of the natinal audience, compared to Perry Como's 31.8%.
Over the past eight weeks, the ratings for 'Stage Show' had not been significantly improved by Elvis' half-dozen appearances. Following the show, Scotty, Bill. D.J. and Red West, who had accompanied the group for the past few weeks, loaded the instruments into two cars and set off for memphis. Elvis remained in New York for an extra day or two to do a few interviews and talk business with RCA Victor and the William Morris Agency.
For these appearances the band rented instruments in New York while Elvis associates Red West and Gene Smith transported the band's own instruments to the next concert appearance using a pink trailer that Elvis' father Vernon had built for this purpose. After the fourth 'Stage Show' the rented standup bass that Bill Black had enthusiastically played had to be repaired. Bill had broken the neck, sound post and the back of the instrument. The repairs cost $32.96.
